What a SOOF lift blepharoplasty can do for you

A SOOF lift blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a great way to use a very small and subtle alteration to the face to create a much younger appearance. As we age, crow’s feet form around the corners of our eyes, and a very small deposit of fat right under our lower eyelids called the suborbicularis oculi fat (or SOOF) sinks out of place as the fascial layer of tissue, which holds it in place, relaxes. This makes the eyes look wider than they are, and creates puffy areas right under them which are one of the less widely known signs of aging.

Many surgeons regard the SOOF lift blepharoplasty as more closely related to the midface lift than to the upper eyelid lift, because a midface lift involves lifting the fat of the malar pad of the cheek, and the SOOF typically rests on the upper cheek. This is one reason why it’s best to have this procedure performed by someone who has experience in facial plastic surgery of many sorts.

A SOOF lift versus a regular open lower lid blepharoplasty

In an open lower lid blepharoplasty, the surgeon makes an incision under the eyelashes of the lower lid, lifts the skin and muscle and removes the fat altogether. This takes care of the wrinkles and puffiness, but the absence of the fat gives the lower eyelid and tear through a hollow look. Sometimes it’s replaced by another deposit of fat taken from another part of the body, but this carries a risk of its own — that the new lump of fat will (you might not want to read the rest of this sentence) be too heavy for the lower lid and make it pull away from the eyeball.

So the most experienced facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte cam up with a better procedure — the SOOF lift blepharoplasty, in which the surgeon makes the initial incision on the inside of the eyelid, lifts the suborbicularis oculi fat back into place and tightens the fascial layer in order to hold it in place. This works much better to bring back the original appearance of the eyes.

The doctor who developed the SOOF lift blepharoplasty as an alternative to the traditional procedure is Dr. Sean Freeman of Charlotte. He has been certified by two different surgery boards, the American Board of Otolaryngology (head and neck surgery) and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Since 1988 he has done nothing but facial plastic surgery, including eyelid surgeries, and has often taught this procedure to other surgeons.
